Award Winning Industrial Demolition and Remediation Contractor

Liberty Industrial have established an enviable reputation based on integrity and technical capability, receiving international acclaim for the delivery of some of Australia’s largest and most complex demolition and remediation projects in the mining and resources sector.

Liberty Industrial’s Munmorah Power Station Removal Project has been awarded the Industrial Demolition Award at the recent World Demolition Awards in November.

The award-winning project involved the removal of a 1400-megawatt coal fired power station. The project is the largest power station demolition project to be carried out in Australia to date.

The works included more than 890 tonnes of bonded and friable asbestos removal, involving extensive negative air enclosures erected throughout the floors of the 60-metre-high boilers, and asbestos removal via rope access from the twin 155 metre chimney stacks

Liberty Industrial carried out three key explosive demolition events during the course of the power station’s removal including the explosive demolition of the twin 155 metre high chimney stacks and the demolition of the power station four boilers; the largest boilers demolished in Australia to date.

Liberty Industrial mobilised an impressive array of plant and equipment to undertake the project, including a custom built 260 tonne Liebherr 994 excavator, modified to accommodate the world largest demolition shear, which was put to work processing large structural steel members associated with the heavy boilers, turbine hall, precipitators and filter fabric structures.

The removal of the power station was carried out safely, sustainably, and in accordance with stakeholder expectations. More than 100,000 tonnes of waste was recycled throughout the course of the project

The annual event is the major international awards event celebrating excellence and innovation within the demolition industry.

In addition to winning the Industrial Demolition Award, Liberty Industrial were also successful in three other World Demolition Award categories this year. A reflection of the high standard of projects that they are delivering for their clients throughout Australia.

Liberty Industrial’s Port Kembla Coal Terminal Stacker and Reclaimer Demolition Project was a finalist in the Contract of the Year Over US$1M category. The project involved the demolition of a 1,250 tonne bucket-wheel reclaimer and two 400 tonne stackers. Achieving minimal disruption to the operational coal terminal facility was critical to the project’s success.

Liberty Industrial’s Port Kembla Gateway Crane was shortlisted as a Finalist for Contract of the Year Under US$1M award category. This was a small but highly technical project involving in situ dismantling of a 200 tonne shore-crane located at the end of a Port Jetty using a mobile crawler crane situated directly alongside the redundant jetty crane.

Liberty Industrial was also a finalist in the Safety and Training Award category for establishing and implementing a comprehensive training and capacity building initiative including oxy cutting and excavator operator training packages that provide formal career pathways in the demolition and remediation industry.

Liberty Industrial are no stranger to international acclaim. This is certainly not the first time they have received accolades for demolition projects in the mining, resources sector. This is in fact the fifth World Demolition Award that Liberty Industrial has been awarded in recent years.
