Exxon to begin lithium production in US in 2027

On 13 November, US oil giant Exxon Mobil announced plans to begin its first production of lithium from deposits in south-west Arkansas by 2027 to support the electric vehicle market. Exxon acquired the rights to 120,000 acres of land in southern Arkansas known to hold extensive lithium resources in early 2023. Conventional oil and gas drilling methods will be used to reach lithium-rich saltwater reservoirs 10,000ft underground. The company will then convert lithium into battery-grade material onsite.

Uranium price hits 15-year high

Uranium prices have increased by more than $80 per pound for the first time in more than 15 years due to a nuclear power renaissance and supply disruptions. 

The uranium futures tracking the form known as yellowcake hit $80.25 on Monday, according to Bloomberg.

Gold price hits six-month high

The price of gold hit a six-month high on Monday, likely prompted by investor suspicion that the US Federal Reserve has finished raising interest rates, along with a weaker dollar boosting demand. Spot gold prices rose to $2,013.99 per ounce, taking the precious metal’s gain to just over 10%.

Copper prices rebound after hitting 11-month low

Copper prices rebounded on Monday afternoon 23 October, 2023, after dropping to their lowest level since November 2022. 

Prices fell by as much as 1.2% to $7,856 a tonne on the London Metal Exchange (LME), the lowest in 11 months.
