Patent applications related to cloud decreased, on average, by 17% per year on average since 2020

The global mining industry experienced a 17% decline in annual average growth rate (AAGR) in the number of cloud-related patent applications between 2020 and 2022. The total number of cloud-related grants decreased by an AAGR of 21% during the same period, according to GlobalData's patent analytics database. 

Notably, the number of cloud-related patent applications in the mining industry was 100 since 2020, while 81 applications were granted.

The top five companies by filings accounted for 36% of patent applications

Analysis of patent applications by company shows that China Baowu Steel Group filed the most cloud patents within the mining industry since 2020, with eight.

It was followed by Ansteel Group with seven cloud patent applications, Jinchuan Group with five applications, and China Energy Investment and Magang (Group) Holding with four applications each. 

The top five companies by grants accounted for 43% of successful patent grants

Analysis of patent grants by companies shows that China Energy Investment was granted six patents related to cloud within the mining industry since 2020. It was followed by Vale (four grants), Maanshan Iron and Steel, and Xi'an University of Science and Technology with three grants each, and Ansteel Group (two grants).

Patent activity was driven by China with an 84% share of total patent publications

The largest share of cloud-related patent publications in the mining industry since 2020 was held by China with 84%, followed by South Korea (5%) and Australia (4%).
