Safety Risks Associated with Hoist Cylinder Pin Removals

Komatsu 830E Hoist Cylinder Pins are susceptible to seizing resulting in the need for hot works to lance out the pins, taking a single boilermaker between 5-8 hours to remove the 2-pins required to remove one rear suspension cylinder.

Not only does the use of hot works result in prolonged fleet downtime but creates several hazards that pose risks to workers and the environment if not properly addressed.

These hazards include the intense heat generated during thermal lancing, which can weaken metal integrity, high levels of noise pollution that can permanently damage workers' hearing health, respiratory risks from inhaling fumes produced during thermal lancing, and fire and burn hazards from open flames and high temperatures.

Solving Common Hoist Cylinder Pin Seizures

To solve this issue, Geographe developed a Colleted Pin Assembly (CPA) to suit the rear suspension & sway bar of the Komatsu 830e. Incorporating a tapered collet system, the CPA creates a self-wedging effect between the pin & frame bores, significantly reducing pin seizure and eliminating the need for hot works.

Improvement Factors

  • Decreases deviation from safe working procedures.
  • Decreased extended downtime for installations and removals.
  • Eliminates the need for thermal lancing.
  • Elimination of tyre handling
  • Reduced risk of damage to mating frame
  • Multi-bolt design ensures collets pull up evenly & securely
