Polystone CubX, part of Dotmar’s Polystone family, is a groundbreaking plastic construction sheet redefining how tanks are built, offering mining operations an unmatched trifecta of strength, versatility, and ease of use.

What makes Polystone CubX unique?

Available in both polyethylene and polypropylene, the Polystone CubX is engineered with an internal cube structure that provides exceptional stiffness while remaining lightweight. This patented design eliminates the need for extensive steel reinforcement, a common pain point in tank fabrication.

Its lightweight yet strong internal cube structure reduces weight by up to 50% compared to solid plastic sheets, while maintaining impressive rigidity. This innovative design also requires up to 28% fewer steel reinforcements, significantly cutting material costs and speeding up installation.

The material’s thermal and chemical resistance ensures durability in harsh environments, including exposure to aggressive chemicals and fluctuating temperatures, which are common in mineral processing. Its structure enables faster fabrication, reducing construction timelines and minimising downtime for critical infrastructure. Additionally, Polystone CubX offers customisable safety features, such as optional leak-monitoring recesses, making it an ideal choice for storing hazardous chemicals securely.

Case study: Comparing the benefits of Polystone P CubX for tank fabrication

To assess the effectiveness of Polystone P CubX in rectangular tank manufacturing, a detailed analysis was made comparing three materials:

  • Solid polypropylene sheets (25mm)
  • 40mm twin-wall polypropylene sheets
  • 57mm twin-wall Polystone P CubX

Each material was tested under identical conditions to ensure a fair comparison. The test scenario involved designing a tank measuring 6m x 2.5m x 1.8m, intended to store water at 30°C with a 15-year design life. Compliance with DVS 2205 standards was a critical requirement, ensuring the structural integrity and safety of the tank.

Here’s how Polystone CubX transformed the process

  • Steel Reinforcement Savings: Polystone CubX reduced steel usage by 28% compared to solid sheets and 21% compared to twin-wall sheets. This meant fewer materials to source, transport, and weld—streamlining the entire process.
  • Manufacturing Time: Fabrication was completed 39% faster than with solid plastic sheets, getting the tank operational sooner—critical for mining sites where every hour of downtime can mean lost revenue.
  • Cost Efficiency: The total cost of the Polystone CubX tank was 26% lower than its solid sheet counterpart, a significant saving for large-scale projects.
  • Ease of Transport and Installation: The lightweight nature of Polystone CubX made it easier to handle and install, even in remote locations, reducing on-site labour risks.

Why thickness matters

The exceptional performance of Polystone P CubX stems from its 57mm thickness, which enhances the Moment of Inertia—an essential property for resisting deflection under liquid pressure. In rectangular tanks, resistance to deflection increases exponentially with sheet thickness, making Polystone P CubX particularly advantageous for larger tanks.
